HOW THE ARMY USES ASVAB SCORES

One Test, Two Different Decisions

First Decision

AFQT Eligibility

AR, MK, WK, and PC determine the AFQT percentile used for basic academic enlistment qualification.

Second Decision

Army Line Scores

Different combinations of verbal, math, science, electronics, mechanical, auto, and shop performance help classify applicants for Army career categories and MOS opportunities.

ARMY ENLISTMENT THRESHOLD

Do Not Make 31 Your Final Study Goal

The Army currently lists an AFQT of at least 31 for standard enlistment eligibility. But meeting the minimum does not mean you qualify for every MOS.

A better strategy is to clear the enlistment threshold and then build the line score required by your preferred Army job.

AFQT FOUNDATION

The Four Subjects That Protect Army Eligibility

Arithmetic Reasoning

Rates, ratios, percentages, proportions, fractions, and multi-step word problems.

Mathematics Knowledge

Algebra, equations, exponents, geometry, number rules, and probability.

Word Knowledge

Vocabulary, synonyms, roots, prefixes, suffixes, and context clues.

Paragraph Comprehension

Main idea, direct detail, inference, writer purpose, and evidence from text.

ARMY LINE SCORES

Ten Career Score Areas Change What You Should Study

The Army highlights different ASVAB subject strengths for different job categories. That makes a MOS-based
study plan more useful than treating every subtest equally.

Clerical

Useful for administrative and personnel-focused career paths.

Combat

Combines verbal ability with practical mechanical and shop knowledge.

Electronics

Requires strength across science, math, and electronics.

Field Artillery

Blends applied math with mechanical reasoning.

General Maintenance

Rewards broad technical knowledge across science, math, shop, and electronics.

General Technical

Built around verbal ability and arithmetic reasoning.

Mechanical Maintenance

Strong practical, mechanical, and electrical understanding matters.

Operators & Food

Uses verbal skill together with Auto and Shop and Mechanical Comprehension.

Surveillance & Communication

A mixed profile using verbal, arithmetic, shop, and mechanical skills.

Skilled Technical

Combines science, verbal, mechanical, and mathematics knowledge.

ARMY LINE SCORE SPOTLIGHT

GT Is More Than a Math Score

The official ASVAB program lists Army GT as AR + VE.

That means improving GT depends on Arithmetic Reasoning plus the verbal performance built from Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension.

For GT-focused preparation, vocabulary and reading deserve just as much attention as arithmetic word problems.

MOS-FIRST STUDY PLANNING

Start With the Army Job, Then Work Backward

1

Pick 2–3 MOS options

2

Check the required line score

3

Find the ASVAB inputs behind it

4

Protect AR, MK, WK, and PC

5

Repair the weakest MOS-relevant subject

HIGH-VALUE SUBTESTS

Some Subjects Support Several Army Career Areas

Verbal Expression

VE appears in Clerical, Combat, GT, Operators & Food, Surveillance & Communication, and Skilled Technical.

Arithmetic Reasoning

AR supports AFQT and is emphasized in Clerical, Electronics, Field Artillery, GT, and Surveillance & Communication.

Mechanical Comprehension

MC matters across Combat, Field Artillery, Mechanical Maintenance, Operators & Food, Surveillance & Communication, and Skilled Technical.

ARMY-SPECIFIC PATHWAY

What If Your AFQT Is Below the Standard Minimum?

The Army currently describes academic preparation options for some applicants who need to improve an otherwise potentially qualifying score.

Eligibility is not automatic. A recruiter can confirm whether the current program applies to your situation.

TESTING OPTIONS

PiCAT and Army Retest Basics

PiCAT

Eligible first-time applicants may receive PiCAT access through a recruiter. A potentially qualifying result must later be confirmed through a proctored Verification Test.

Retesting

Army retesting follows waiting periods, so use diagnostic practice to identify weaknesses before your official attempt instead of treating the official test as practice.

COMMON ARMY ASVAB MISTAKES

Avoid Study Habits That Ignore Army Line Scores

Studying only until you reach 31
The standard AFQT minimum does not guarantee the line score required for your preferred MOS.
Choosing subjects without checking your MOS
Different Army career categories emphasize different combinations of verbal, math, science, electronics, shop, and mechanical skills.
Ignoring vocabulary for technical careers
Verbal Expression contributes to several Army line-score categories, including GT and Skilled Technical.
Studying EI alone for Electronics
The Army Electronics category also depends on General Science, Arithmetic Reasoning, and Mathematics Knowledge.
Skipping Auto and Shop
AS knowledge matters across several combat, maintenance, operator, and communication-related line-score categories.
Treating practice % as an Army score
Practice accuracy is useful for progress tracking, but it is not an official AFQT percentile or Army line score.
