Free Air Force ASVAB Practice Test
The Air Force uses ASVAB results for two different goals: basic enlistment qualification through the AFQT and career matching through the MAGE aptitude areas.
Build the four AFQT subjects first. Then target the Mechanical, Administrative, General, or Electronics score connected to the Air Force career you want.

HOW AIR FORCE USES ASVAB SCORES
Think About Your Results in Two Layers
Your AFQT and MAGE scores answer different questions.
Layer 1
AFQT
Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge, Word Knowledge, and Paragraph Comprehension determine basic enlistment qualification.
Layer 2
MAGE
Mechanical, Administrative, General, and Electronics scores help connect your aptitude profile with enlisted Air Force career fields.
AFQT FOUNDATION
Start With the Four AFQT Subjects
Arithmetic Reasoning
Word problems, percentages, rates, ratios, and applied arithmetic.
Mathematics Knowledge
Algebra, equations, geometry, exponents, and number rules.
Word Knowledge
Vocabulary, synonyms, word parts, and context clues.
Paragraph Comprehension
Main idea, direct detail, inference, and passage evidence.
CURRENT AIR FORCE ENLISTMENT MINIMUMS
Minimum AFQT Depends on Education Status
31
High school senior or graduate
This is the current minimum AFQT listed by the Air Force for applicants with a high school diploma or who are high school seniors.
50
GED holder
The Air Force currently lists a higher minimum AFQT for applicants entering with a GED.
AIR FORCE MAGE SCORES
The Four Aptitude Areas That Shape
Career Matching
Mechanical
Mechanical principles, Auto and Shop, arithmetic reasoning, and verbal ability.
Administrative
Verbal ability and Mathematics Knowledge.
General
Verbal ability and Arithmetic Reasoning.
Electronics
Arithmetic, math knowledge, electronics, and general science.
PUBLISHED MAGE FORMULAS
Which ASVAB Subtests Feed Each
MAGE Score?
These formulas show why one study plan does not fit every Navy applicant.
| MAGE Category | ASVAB Formula |
|---|---|
| Mechanical (M) | AR + 2VE + MC + AS |
| Administrative (A) | VE + MK |
| General (G) | VE + AR |
| Electronics (E) | AR + MK + EI + GS |
WHAT TO STUDY
Build Each MAGE Area From Its Actual Inputs
Mechanical
Practice gears, levers, torque, pulleys, pressure, engines, tools, shop knowledge, arithmetic, and verbal skills.
Administrative
Focus on vocabulary, reading comprehension, algebra, fractions, number properties, and basic geometry.
General
Give extra time to arithmetic word problems, ratios, rates, vocabulary, reading evidence, and inference.
Electronics
Review voltage, current, resistance, circuits, components, algebra, physical science, and General Science.
CAREER SCORE EXAMPLE
Different Air Force Careers Can Require
Different MAGE Scores
Ground Transportation
Example: 40 Mechanical
Mechanical aptitude can be the main qualifying score.
Engineering
Example: 49 General
General aptitude may be the main career threshold.
Cyber Warfare Operations
Example: 70 Electronics
Electronics-heavy careers can require a much stronger E score.
Electrical Systems
Example: 43 M + 45 E
Some careers use more than one MAGE category.
Special Missions Aviator
Example: 60 G + 60 M
Strong General and Mechanical performance may both matter.
Weather
Example: 66 G + 50 E
General and Electronics scores can work together in technical career qualification.
Administrative
VE + MK
Prioritize verbal ability and mathematics knowledge.
General Technician
VE + AR
Build strong reading and vocabulary skills plus arithmetic reasoning.
CAREER-FIRST STRATEGY
Build Your Study Plan From the
Career Backward
On CAT-ASVAB, you cannot return to a question after submitting it.
1
Choose a target Air Force career
2
Find the MAGE requirement
3
Identify its ASVAB inputs
4

5
Repair the weakest career subtest
HIGH-VALUE SUBTESTS
Some Subjects Help More Than
One Score Area
Arithmetic Reasoning
AR contributes to AFQT and also appears in Mechanical, General, and Electronics scoring.
Word Knowledge + PC
WK and PC affect AFQT and combine into VE, which appears in Mechanical, Administrative, and General scores.
Mathematics Knowledge
MK contributes to AFQT, Administrative, and Electronics scoring.
ELECTRONICS SUPPORT
Where General Science Matters
General Science is not part of AFQT, but it contributes directly to the Air Force Electronics score.
Review biology, Earth science, chemistry basics, physics, energy, matter, and scientific reasoning.
MECHANICAL SUPPORT
Where Auto and Shop Information Matters
On CAT-ASVAB, Auto Information and Shop Information are administered separately but combine into the reported AS score.
That combined score feeds the Mechanical MAGE category.
MECHANICAL REASONING
Why Mechanical Comprehension
Deserves Its Own Practice
Mechanical Comprehension tests how physical systems behave. You may need to reason through gear direction, leverage, pressure, pulleys, friction, or force-distance tradeoffs.
When you miss a question, identify the mechanical principle rather than memorizing the diagram.
Assembling Objects Is Still an ASVAB Subtest
AO measures spatial visualization and can still appear on the ASVAB.
AO Is Not in Current MAGE Formulas
The published Mechanical, Administrative, General, and Electronics formulas do not currently include Assembling Objects.

CAT-ASVAB Is Adaptive
The computer test adjusts question difficulty to your estimated ability. A difficult-looking question is not automatically a sign that your test is going badly.
No Calculator
Practice fractions, percentages, ratios, algebra, exponents, area, perimeter, multiplication, and division without calculator dependence.
PRACTICE QUALITY
Do Not Turn Practice Into Answer
Memorization
A good practice test should use original questions that reproduce the skill being tested rather than copied or leaked exam items.
Your goal is to learn the method you can apply to a new question.
MAGE DIAGNOSTIC
Review Misses by the Score Area They Affect
WRONG-ANSWER REVIEW
Give Every Miss a Cause and a Fix
Knowledge Gap
You did not know the concept. Fix it by studying the rule, formula, word, or principle.
Setup Error
You knew the topic but misunderstood what the question was asking.
Execution Error
You chose the right method but made a sign, arithmetic, or reading mistake.
Time Error
You knew how to solve it but needed too long. Practice the same type in short timed sets.

TESTING OPTION
PiCAT and Retest Basics
PiCAT
Eligible first-time applicants may receive PiCAT access through a recruiter. It has no individual subtest time limits and requires a later proctored Verification Test for the score to become official.
Retest Timing
The first retest requires a one-month wait, another one-month wait applies before the next retest, and additional retests require a six-month waiting period.
