HOW NAVY USES ASVAB SCORES

Think About Your Score in Two Stages

The AFQT and Navy composite scores do different jobs. A strong study plan should prepare for both.

STAGE 1

AFQT

Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge, Word Knowledge, and Paragraph Comprehension determine your AFQT percentile and basic enlistment eligibility.

STAGE 2

Navy Composite Scores

Different combinations of verbal, math, science, technical, mechanical, and spatial subtests help classify applicants for Navy career areas.

AFQT FOUNDATION

The Four Subjects You Should Protect First

Arithmetic Reasoning

Word problems, rates, percentages, ratios, and multi-step arithmetic.

Mathematics Knowledge

Algebra, equations, exponents, geometry, and number rules.

Word Knowledge

Synonyms, vocabulary, word parts, and meaning from context.

Paragraph Comprehension

Main idea, direct detail, inference, and evidence from short passages.

NAVY CAREER CLASSIFICATION

Current Navy Composite Formulas

These formulas show why one study plan does not fit every Navy applicant.

SUBJECT PRIORITY

What to Study for the Navy ASVAB

After the AFQT subjects, add the technical areas that appear in the composite
closest to your target career.

Arithmetic Reasoning

High priority because it affects AFQT and appears in many Navy composites.

Mathematics Knowledge

Important for AFQT and for electronics, engineering, nuclear, operations, hospitalman, and administrative composites.

Word Knowledge

Supports AFQT and helps form the verbal score used in several Navy composites.

Paragraph Comprehension

Supports AFQT and the verbal composite. Practice evidence-based reading, main idea, and inference.

General Science

Useful for electronics, basic electricity and electronics, and hospital man classification.

Electronics Information

Important for Navy electronics classification. Review circuits, voltage, current, resistance, and components.

Auto and Shop

Used in engineering and one mechanical composite. Review tools, engines, fasteners, and shop basics.

Mechanical Comprehension

Important for mechanical and nuclear composites. Focus on force, gears, levers, pulleys, pressure, and energy.

Assembling Objects

Used in Mechanical 2 and Operations. Practice mental rotation, contact points, and piece fitting.

Verbal Composite

VE comes from Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension and appears across several Navy composites.

CAREER-BASED STUDY

Choose Extra Study by Navy Career Direction

Electronics

GS + AR + MK + EI

Add electronics and science after building your AFQT math foundation.

Engineering

AS + MK

Give extra time to shop, automotive, and mathematics skills.

Mechanical

AR + AS + MC or AR + MC + AO

Mechanical principles, spatial reasoning, and practical shop knowledge matter.

Nuclear

VE + AR + MK + MC

Strong verbal, math, and mechanical performance all matter.

Operations

VE + AR + MK + AO

Combine verbal and math strength with spatial reasoning.

Hospitalman

VE + GS + MK

Verbal skill, science knowledge, and math are the main focus.

Administrative

VE + MK

Prioritize verbal ability and mathematics knowledge.

General Technician

VE + AR

Build strong reading and vocabulary skills plus arithmetic reasoning.

SCORE CAUTION

What Is the Minimum ASVAB Score for the
Navy?

Third-party prep pages may publish a fixed minimum such as 35. Current Navy recruiting guidance instead requires a qualifying ASVAB score and notes that specific jobs may have additional score requirements.

For a current applicant, the safest wording is to confirm the current enlistment threshold and job-specific score requirements with a Navy recruiter.

AFQT Goal

AFQT is a percentile from 1 to 99. It is used for enlistment qualification.

Career Goal

A single overall score does not guarantee every Navy job. Your target subtests should also support the composite connected to your intended field.

CAT-ASVAB FORMAT

Current Proctored CAT-ASVAB Subtests

These are the standard scored-question counts and time limits when no added tryout questions are included.

Subtest Questions Time Limit
General Science Questions 15 Time Limit 12 min

MATH PRACTICE

Do Not Train With a Calculator

Practice Without It

Calculators are not allowed on the ASVAB. Practice multiplication, division, fractions, percentages, ratios, algebra, geometry, and simple exponent rules without calculator dependence.

Use Scratch Work

You do not need to do every step mentally. Train yourself to write clean calculations and check signs, units, and order of operations.

DIAGNOSTIC REVIEW

Use Your First Practice Test to Find the Real Problem

STUDY PLAN

Build Your Navy ASVAB Plan in Two Layers

Protect Your AFQT

Start with Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge, Word Knowledge, and Paragraph Comprehension.

If one of these areas is weak, give it priority before spending most of your time on technical subjects.

Build Your Navy Career Composite

Add the extra technical subjects used in the composite closest to your intended career.

That may include GS, EI, AS, MC, or AO depending on the field.

WEEKLY PRACTICE

REALISTIC PRACTICE

Practice Under CAT-Style Conditions

Do not memorize every line. Pick one distinctive feature and follow it through the rotation.

  • Do not change an answer after submitting it.
  • Keep track of time.
  • Work without outside help.
  • Use scratch paper for calculations.
  • Review explanations only after answering.

ALTERNATIVE TESTING AND RETESTS

PiCAT and ASVAB Retest Basics

PiCAT

Eligible first-time applicants may receive PiCAT access through a recruiter. PiCAT has no individual subtest time limits, but qualifying results must later be verified through a proctored Verification Test.

Retest Timing

After the initial ASVAB, the first retest requires a one-calendar-month wait. A second one-month wait applies before another retest. Further retests require a six-month wait.

FAQs

Navy ASVAB Practice Test FAQs

No. Navy applicants take the ASVAB. The Navy then uses AFQT and Navy-specific composite scores for enlistment and job classification.

Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge, Word Knowledge, and Paragraph Comprehension.

The standard CAT AO section gives 18 minutes without tryout questions.

The Navy uses combinations of ASVAB subtest scores to create composites for career classification.

Do not treat an older fixed number from a prep site as guaranteed current policy. Confirm the current enlistment threshold with a Navy recruiter.

AFQT percentile scores range from 1 to 99.

No. AFQT is a percentile score, not the percentage of questions you answered correctly.

Start with AR, MK, WK, and PC. Then add the subtests used in the Navy composite connected to your intended career.

No. Calculators are not allowed on the ASVAB.

No. Once you submit a CAT-ASVAB answer, you cannot go back to that question.

The proctored CAT-ASVAB takes about two hours on average, although individual testing time can vary.

Eligible applicants may receive PiCAT access from a recruiter. The result must later be verified through a proctored Verification Test.

ASVAB scores can generally be used for enlistment for up to two years from the test date when they can be verified.
